Description: Hatiora salicornioides
Synonym: Formally known as Rhipsalis salicornioides
Rhipsalis are an interesting group of epiphytic cacti commonly known as Mistletoe Cactus. Most species are found inhabiting the tropical forests of Central and South America with a small occurrence in Africa and Asia.
Being epiphytic, most species are naturally found growing on the surfaces of trees where they attach to the branches and obtain their moisture and nutrients from the surrounding environment without being parasitic to the tree. They can also be found growing as lithophytes, where they inhabit the surfaces and crevices of rocks.
Many species have a pendulous habit so they are well suited to growing in hanging baskets or grown on a ledge where the branches can naturally hang down. Although we have not tried this, we suspect they would also grow well mounted on a slab of tree fern provided they receive enough water.
Rhipsalis can be a little slow growing at first but once they settle in they quickly establish, forming a lush, graceful plant.
Plant Care: Being an understory plant, Rhipsalis prefer to be grown in a partially shaded environment with good indirect light. Use a well drained potting mix and maintain a good level of watering throughout the year, with a little less over the winter months. Allow the pots to dry out between each watering. The main growing period is throughout spring and summer and as Rhipsalis love humidity they will greatly benefit from a spray or misting with water at this time.
Although most are found in the tropics, they are actually quite cold tolerant provided they are kept a bit dryer throughout winter and protected from frost.
