Description: It’s throughout the summer months when this dark beauty is at its best, displaying the most intense colours of red and black unlike anything we have seen before. So if you love the darker coloured variegates, than this one is for you!

As the rosettes close for summer, almost all the other colours disappear, as the rosettes darken to a deep crimson red and black. Then throughout winter when the plants are actively growing, the rosettes display a variegated mix of green, red, yellow and white, making its dark summer appearance almost unrecognisable.

We also love the look of 'Meiji' in Autumn just as it is breaking dormancy, where the plants develop a sudden burst of yellow and green as the rosettes begin to open, contrasting the darker outer leaves to perfection.

Plant Care: Tough and easy to grow. Copes very well with the heat and summer sun and this is where the plants will develop the darkest colours.

Origins: Believed to be a variegated form of Aeonium 'Mardi Gras'.

Now you may be thinking, hang on - 'Mardi Gras' is already a variegate! And yes it is....  So we suspect that the development is either chemically induced, which alters the existing variegation within the plant (this treatment can even create new variegation in non-variegated plants) or was initially discovered as a sport.

We will try and do a post on this shortly.

Comments: We believe this may be the same as what is also sold under the name 'Miki'.

'Meiji' is also somewhat similar to 'Meiya' which is a variegated form of 'Mortica' (the name given to the dark reversion of 'Mardi Gras') - confused yet?
