Description: Aeonium 'Butterfly' is a crazy creation of kaleidoscopic variegation!
'Butterfly' is definitely a unique looking Aeonium and not only because of the highly variable variegation, but also due to the unusual shape it develops which somewhat resembles the shape of a candelabra.
The variegation is a highly variable mix of green and yellow, and when grown well the rosettes will also develop beautiful streaks of dark purple and a deep red outer leaf margin.
The variegation is extremely variable from plant to plant and is somewhat similar to the variegation found in Aeonium 'Big Bang' where no two rosettes ever look the same, making each individual plant truly unique!
'Butterfly' also develops the most interesting shape by growing a large dominant main rosette, which are then surrounded by smaller growing side branches that reach out on long wiry stems.
The main rosette will grow to approximately 25 - 30cm in diameter, with the side rosettes growing much smaller to around 10cm wide.
Overall this one is a winner which we predict will become extremely popular.
Plant Care: Butterfly' is a tough and strong growing cultivar and easy to look after.
The plants can grow quite large if allowed, so we recommend planting in a large size pot allowing plenty of room for the plants to spread. Grow in good light to bring out the lovely purple colours and the characteristic red edge on the leaf margins.
Origins: 'Butterfly' is thought to be a variegated form of the cultivar Aeonium 'Red Edge'.
'Red Edge' is believed to be a hybrid created by Surreal Succulents in the UK. Of undisclosed parentage, we suspect that 'Red Edge' is merely a selected form of the species Aeonium ciliatum or a hybrid involving Aeonium ciliatum?
Comments: Also sold under the names Aeonium 'Red Edge' variegate and Caidie.
We have selected to go with the name 'Butterfly' as we feel this is now the most commonly used name for this variegate.
